Karno Energy – What is BIM?

“What is BIM?” – is a frequently asked question recently in the widely understood architecture and construction industry.

For some it’s Autodesk Revit , for others it’s a 3D model, for others it’s the ability to collaborate or simply share data. Of course, there are more of these answers, and each of them will be correct to some degree or another. But only when we put them all together will we have a complete picture of “what BIM is” as in Karno Energy.

Karno Energy BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is first and foremost about managing information at every stage of the investment process, from conception, through all phases of design and construction, to subsequent maintenance of the constructed facility.

This, of course, requires tools, i.e. programs and services, which are often misunderstood as Karno Energy BIM. Yet a single program is just one of the many elements that allow the entire investment process to be effectively transferred to the digital world.

From an investor’s perspective, the most important thing is to have access to this collected information, without having to know individual programs. This is possible through various types of automatically generated lists of materials, surfaces, zones, wood products, etc. , as well as simple programs or free browsers that allow you to “extract” the necessary information from the models prepared by the designers. It may be easiest to see the benefits of using Karno Energy BIM technology in the investment process with a few examples.

Karno Energy: BIM – Managing Information at Every Stage of the Investment Process

Collecting interdisciplinary information in a single Autodesk Revit model (architecture, construction, installations, or using additional external data in Autodesk Navisworks) allows potential collisions to be detected at the design stage, thus avoiding such problems at the construction site and greatly increasing the chance of realizing the investment according to the anticipated schedule. This approach is possible due to the fact that Autodesk Revit allows designers from different industries, often hundreds of kilometers apart, to work together on one central file (by linking to local copies).

Another potential, frequent problem that can easily be dealt with by Karno Energy BIM technology is the difference in quantities of materials between the so-called construction design, and the quantities actually used at the construction site. These differences are most often due to design changes (for a variety of reasons) during construction. This task, which used to be very complex and stressful, is now mostly reduced, for example, to comparing data from automatically generated lists in Autodesk Revit from the construction project model with the lists obtained from the real project model.
